Marie, my Mother’s first cousin, was a dear precious lady. She and Mother shared family genealogy, pictures and stories throughout their lives. Marie loved her family, her family history, and she was a first rate genealogist.
I came to know Marie while I was researching and writing a paper on the Spruce Pine Pottery in 1990. We had long telephone conversations while she shared detailed memories of the workings of the pottery and the people who worked there for her father and grandfather. She cherished childhood memories of the pottery - it was a “big event” for her to take her cot down and spend the night near the kiln while it was being fired.
This wonderful lady had a really sharp mind, excellent recall and told a fine story. It was through Marie’s influence that my paper on the pottery was published in the Journal of Muscle Shoals History, Vol. XIII, 1993.
It has been my great pleasure to drop in, along with her first cousin Kathleen, to visit Marie in her home in Phil Campbell. I miss her very much.
